Marine Biology Research Group

The Marine Biology research group studies topics ranging from the North Sea bottom, over laboratory experiments, to deep-sea, tropical and polar environments. With their marine research, they intend to:

  • Gain scientific insight in the ecology and evolution of marine ecosystems
  • Contribute to the sustainable management and exploitation of 'the last wilderness'

This Ghent University research group is working in the marine environment and has specialized mainly in the ecology of the sea bottom. The community of organisms that live on, in or near the seabed is called benthos. Benthos is important because of its biodiversity and the numbers in which it occurs. Also, it is crucial in the ecosystem as food for other species.
